What Well Protectors Do
A well protector is the vertical enclosure that surrounds the above-ground portion of a monitoring well casing. It prevents vehicle collisions from shearing off the well head, deters tampering, and marks the well location visually. Regulatory compliance at most monitoring sites requires a protective enclosure around every well that extends above grade.
Steel vs. Aluminum Lids
Steel lids offer maximum security and impact resistance. Best for sites near roads, parking areas, or anywhere vehicle contact is possible.
Aluminum lids are lighter and corrosion-resistant. Better for sites where the protector is in a non-traffic area and long-term rust resistance matters more than impact strength.
Available Configurations
Square protectors for 4”, 6”, and 8” well casings, all 5 feet tall. Top kits available separately if you already have the post installed and need a replacement lid.

How much does a well protector cost?
Our well protectors run from about $67 for a replacement top kit up to roughly $596 for the largest complete enclosures. A complete protector for a 4” monitoring well typically lands in the low-to-mid hundreds, with 6” and 8” sizes priced upward from there. Lid material — steel or aluminum — also affects the price, and all six configurations in the collection are priced on their product pages.
What can I cover an above-ground well with?
For a monitoring or observation well that extends above grade, use a purpose-built well protector: a square steel enclosure with a locking lid that surrounds the casing. It guards against vehicle impact, tampering, and weather, and satisfies the protective-enclosure requirement most regulators impose on above-grade completions. Decorative rock covers suit residential water wells, but regulated monitoring wells need a lockable steel enclosure sized to the casing — ours fit 4”, 6”, and 8” wells and stand 5 feet tall.
Can well covers withstand heavy weight?
Above-ground protectors aren't meant to be driven over — they're built to resist side impact and shield the well head from a vehicle strike, and bollards are recommended in active traffic areas for extra protection. If the well sits where wheels will pass directly over it, complete it flush with grade using a traffic-rated monitoring well manhole instead of an above-grade protector.
Should I choose a steel or aluminum lid?
Steel lids give maximum impact resistance and security — the right call near roads, loading areas, or anywhere vehicle contact is plausible. Aluminum lids are lighter to handle and inherently corrosion-resistant, which suits coastal or chemically aggressive sites in non-traffic locations. Both lid types accept padlocks, and the enclosure body is steel in either case.
Do I need both a well protector and a well plug?
Yes. The protector shields the above-ground casing from physical damage and marks the well location visibly; the plug or cap seals the well opening itself against contamination and unauthorized access. They serve different functions, and most monitoring programs require both on every above-grade well as a condition of regulatory compliance.
Can I buy just the top/lid?
Yes. Top kits with locking lids are available separately for 4” well protectors, so if a lid has been damaged by impact or a lost key, you can replace it without excavating or removing the entire enclosure. Check the product page for the top kit that matches your protector size before ordering.
