Why Cast Iron Is Still the Standard
Composite and plastic covers have their place, but cast iron remains the default specification for any installation where load-bearing capacity is non-negotiable. Municipal roadways, parking lots, facility access points — cast iron handles the weight without cracking, warping, or settling out of position over years of service.
Our cast iron covers come from EMCO Wheaton, whose products are installed in municipalities, military bases, and industrial facilities across the country. Every cover is designed for the specific load and environmental conditions of its rated application.
Frame Options
Poly skirt — Lightweight polyethylene frame. Ideal for non-traffic areas: monitoring well access, landscaped utility areas, and residential installations where the cover won’t bear vehicle loads.
Steel skirt — Heavy-gauge steel for maximum structural integrity. Anchors into concrete or asphalt and distributes vehicle loads across the frame. This is the roadway-grade option.
Lid Configurations
- Lay-in — Standard. Lid drops into the frame for easy access. Most common for routine inspection points.
- Bolt-down — Tamper-resistant. Required for secured facilities and locations where unauthorized access is a concern.
- 3/8” lay-in — Thinner lid option for lighter-duty applications.
Available Sizes
Round covers from 6” to 24” diameter. Frame depths from 5” to 24”. If you’re replacing an existing cover, match both the opening diameter and frame depth to ensure proper fit.

FAQ
What’s the difference between poly skirt and steel skirt frames?
Poly skirt frames are lightweight polyethylene — suitable for non-traffic areas like monitoring wells and landscaped utility access. Steel skirt frames are heavy-gauge steel designed for roadway-grade loads and anchor into concrete or asphalt.
Can I get a bolt-down cast iron cover?
Yes. We carry bolt-down lid configurations for applications requiring tamper resistance and secured access. These are secured with bolts rather than simply laying in the frame.
How heavy are cast iron manhole covers?
Weight varies by size. A 12” round cover typically weighs 30–50 lbs. Larger covers are heavier. We recommend using a manhole hook for safe lifting.
