The Right Bailer for the Sampling Protocol
A bailer is the simplest grab-sampling tool for monitoring wells: lower it on a cord, let it fill, pull it up, and transfer to sample containers. No pumps, no purging, no power. But “simple” doesn’t mean “interchangeable” — the bailer you choose affects sample integrity.
Disposable vs. Permanent
Disposable bailers (polyethylene or PVC, sold in cases of 24) are the standard for multi-well sampling events. Use once, discard. Zero cross-contamination risk between wells. This is what most environmental consulting firms use for Phase II ESAs and ongoing monitoring programs where defensible data matters.
Permanent bailers (heavy-wall PVC) are reusable after decontamination. Cost-effective for dedicated single-well monitoring programs where the bailer stays with the well and cross-contamination between sites isn’t a factor.
Weighted vs. Standard
Weighted bailers sink faster — useful in deeper wells or when sampling dense NAPL. Standard (unweighted) bailers work fine for shallow wells and routine water-table sampling.

FAQ
Why use disposable bailers instead of reusable?
Cross-contamination. If you’re sampling multiple wells, a reusable bailer carries trace contaminants between sites even after decontamination. Disposable bailers eliminate that risk entirely — one bailer per well, then discard.
How many bailers do I need for a sampling event?
One disposable bailer per well, minimum. Most sampling protocols require multiple draws per well, but a single bailer can be used for all draws at one well. Order cases of 24 to cover multi-well sites.
