About Vapor Monitoring Well Plugs

When Standard Plugs Won’t Work

A standard locking well plug creates a sealed closure — nothing in, nothing out. But vapor monitoring wells need to breathe. You need a plug that seals the well against contamination and tampering while providing a controlled port for gas sampling or vapor extraction.

That’s what vapor extraction plugs do. The Torquer vapor extraction design uses the same nylon expansion body as the standard Torquer, but adds a barbed fitting or quick-connect port on top for attaching sampling lines, Tedlar bags, or extraction equipment.

What does a soil vapor extraction well plug do?

It seals the top of a vapor extraction or vapor monitoring well while providing a controlled port for gas flow. The nylon expansion body locks and seals the casing exactly like a standard well plug, but a barbed or quick-connect fitting on top lets you attach sample tubing, Tedlar bags, or SVE extraction lines without breaking the seal — keeping ambient air out of your sample train.

What's the difference between a vapor extraction plug and a standard locking plug?

A standard locking plug creates a fully sealed closure — nothing in, nothing out. A vapor extraction plug adds a barbed or quick-connect port for attaching sampling lines or extraction equipment, allowing controlled gas recovery while the well stays sealed against tampering and ambient air. If the well only needs periodic sampling access with no gas port, a standard plug is the simpler, cheaper choice.

How much does a soil vapor monitoring plug cost?

Our Koby Environmental vapor extraction plugs run from about $18 to $73 each depending on size and schedule. Small 1” SCH 40 plugs sit at the low end; larger 4”–6” and SCH 80 models cost more. Even at the top of the range they're a minor line item next to the sampling equipment they connect to, so most programs keep spares on site for each well size.

What sizes are available?

Vapor extraction plugs run from 1” to 6” — including 1.25” and 1.5” intermediate sizes — in both SCH 40 and SCH 80 configurations. Match the plug to your casing's schedule: SCH 80 pipe has a smaller bore, so plugs are not interchangeable between schedules. How do sampling lines connect to the plug?

Through the fitting on top of the plug — either a barbed stem for push-on tubing or a quick-connect coupling for repeated connect-and-disconnect cycles. Quick-connect extraction connectors are sold separately, which lets one set of sampling lines service many wells: leave a plug installed on each well and carry the connector between them. FlushLock vapor models pair with a matching extraction key.

Can I convert a standard Torquer to vapor extraction?

No. Vapor extraction plugs are a separate product with the extraction fitting molded into the plug body — drilling a port into a standard plug would compromise the seal and the lock. Order the vapor extraction version of the Torquer or FlushLock in your casing size and schedule; the expansion seal and locking hardware install exactly like the standard plugs you already use.
