A utility vault is an underground chamber that houses buried infrastructure — water meters, shut-off valves, electrical connections, and communications equipment — with a surface-level frame and lid for maintenance access. The vault protects the equipment below grade; the cover keeps out traffic loads, debris, and unauthorized access.

Anywhere buried utilities need periodic access: sidewalks, parkways and easements, parking lots, and roadway shoulders. Placement is usually dictated by the utility's route and local code. Vaults in traffic areas need appropriately load-rated lids, while landscaped or pedestrian-only locations can use lighter covers.

A plumbing vault — often called a water meter vault or valve vault — is a utility vault dedicated to water infrastructure. It houses meters, backflow preventers, pressure-reducing valves, or shut-off valves below the frost line. Round vaults in the 12”–24” range handle most single-meter and valve-access installations.

Often, yes. If the buried vault body and frame are sound, a replacement lid costs a fraction of a full assembly. Measure the frame's inside opening and the lid's seat depth before ordering — lids are not universally interchangeable between manufacturers, so confirm dimensions against the product listing.
