Mechanical vs. Pneumatic — When to Use Each
Mechanical when: drain testing, clean-out plugging, well sealing, routine low-to-medium pressure testing, and situations where carrying an air pump isn’t practical.

What is a mechanical test plug used for?
A mechanical test plug seals a pipe opening by hand-tightening a wing nut, which expands a rubber gasket against the pipe wall. Plumbers use them to block drain, waste, and vent lines during pressure and leak testing, to cap clean-outs, and to temporarily seal open pipe ends — no air compressor or inflation equipment required.
What's the difference between a test plug and a pipe plug?
The terms overlap. A test plug is built to hold a specified pressure during DWV or sewer testing, while "pipe plug" covers any device that blocks a pipe, including low-pressure blocking plugs and dust covers. Every test plug is a pipe plug, but a budget blocking plug like the Econ-O-Grip (2 PSI max) should never stand in for a rated test plug.
Can a test plug be used permanently?
No. Mechanical test plugs are temporary tools for testing and maintenance. Rubber gaskets take a compression set and can lose grip over time, so they shouldn't be left as a permanent seal — especially under pressure. For long-term closure, use a glued or threaded cap, or a plug specifically rated for permanent installation.
What is a Gripper plug used for?
The Cherne® Gripper is a mechanical expansion plug used for DWV (drain-waste-vent) testing in residential and commercial plumbing. Inside is a plate-and-gasket assembly: tightening the wing nut compresses the rubber gasket and forces it outward against the pipe wall. It's the industry-standard mechanical plug for end-of-pipe and clean-out testing.
What pressure can a Gripper plug handle?
Cherne Gripper plugs are rated up to 17 PSI, suitable for DWV testing at up to 40 feet of water head. If you need more, higher-pressure mechanical options like Kwik 'n Sure plugs are rated up to 180 PSI depending on the model. Always confirm the rating on the specific product page matches your test requirements.
What sizes do mechanical test plugs come in?
