Put safety first: PPE, hygiene, and entry rules

Front-line staff should have and use appropriate PPE when handling hoses, cleaning pads, or disinfecting equipment—think liquid-resistant gloves, boots, aprons, and eye/face protection—plus immediate access to handwashing. Daily–weekly–monthly care checklist

Every day (or service shift)

  • Walk the site: confirm the hinged lid closes and seats properly; clear debris from the drain receptor.

  • Empty trash and pick up wipes or litter around the pad; ground dumping is prohibited in parks—your visible housekeeping reinforces that rule. National Park Service

Weekly

  • Inspect signage (routed, vinyl, or aluminum) for readability. Replace sun-faded or damaged signs.

  • Verify the hinged lid gasket and hardware are intact; a tight seal helps control odor and pests.

Monthly/seasonal

  • Pressure-wash the pad and bollards; repaint striping/arrows if traffic flow is unclear.

  • Exercise valves and check the trap or interceptor for accumulation per your O&M plan to minimize odors and backups.

Keep lines moving: simple user-education that works

Clear instructions shorten dwell time and cut mistakes. Post these, and include them in your campground map or app:

  1. Prepare: Gloves on; sewer hose and fittings ready.

  2. Connect: Secure the hose to the RV first, then to the station inlet; ensure the hinged lid doesn’t trap the hose when closing after use.

  3. Empty black, then gray to rinse the hose.

  4. Rinse area & stow: Use non-potable rinse only; never connect rinse hoses to drinking water taps.

  5. Leave it cleaner than you found it.

Odor, spills, and clogs: fast response protocol

Seasonal operations: freeze, thaw, repeat
