Choosing the Right Manhole Cover
The cover and frame you need depends on three things: what’s going over it (foot traffic, vehicles, heavy equipment), what environment it’s in (roadway, coastal, chemical facility), and what access dimensions the opening requires.
Material
Cast iron — The industry standard for load-bearing applications. Handles vehicle traffic, resists settling, and lasts decades. Choose cast iron for roadway installations, parking areas, and any location with vehicle exposure.
Composite — UV-stable, corrosion-resistant, and significantly lighter than cast iron. The right choice for coastal environments, chemical facilities, and sites where corrosion would destroy a metal cover over time. Won’t rust, won’t degrade in sunlight.
Steel skirt — Heavy-gauge steel frame for maximum structural rigidity. Used where the frame needs to anchor into concrete or asphalt under traffic loads.
Configuration
- Lay-in lid — Drops into the frame flush. Easy to remove for access, standard for most installations.
- Bolt-down lid — Secured with bolts for tamper resistance. Required for secured facilities and high-traffic locations.
- Cam-lock — Quarter-turn locking mechanism on composite covers. Faster than bolts, more secure than lay-in.
Common Sizing
Round covers from 6” to 44” diameter. Square covers from 18” to 36”. Frame depths from 5” to 24”. If you’re replacing an existing cover, measure the opening diameter and frame depth before ordering. Not sure? Call us at (866) 514-3684 — we help contractors and engineers spec covers every day.

FAQ
Why are manhole covers round?
A round cover can’t fall through its own opening — the diameter is constant in every direction. A square cover, turned diagonally, could drop through. Round is inherently safer for any opening that workers or the public walk near.
How do I measure for a replacement manhole cover?
Measure the inside diameter of the existing frame (the opening the lid sits in), and the frame depth. Order a cover that matches both dimensions. If you’re unsure, call us with the measurements and we’ll confirm the right product.
Cast iron or composite — which should I use?
Cast iron for load-bearing and vehicle-traffic locations. Composite for environments where corrosion, UV, or chemical exposure would degrade metal — coastal sites, chemical plants, and industrial facilities.
Do you carry bolt-down manhole covers?
Yes. We carry bolt-down lid configurations in cast iron for applications requiring tamper-resistant, secured access.
