Specifying Locking Well Plugs for Monitoring Wells
If you’re writing a Phase II ESA, designing a monitoring well network, or maintaining an existing remediation site, the well plug you specify matters. A failed seal means compromised samples, regulatory questions, and re-work that nobody wants to explain to a client.
Every plug we carry uses Koby Environmental’s nylon expansion design — no metal components that corrode in aggressive groundwater chemistry. The gasket expands against the pipe interior when you turn the wing nut, creating a liquid-tight seal that holds through freeze-thaw cycling, vibration, and years of field exposure.
Torquer, FlushLock, J-Plug, or H-Plug — Which One?
Torquer — The standard. Nylon body, wing-nut expansion, accepts padlocks and lockout tags. Available in every size from ½” to 8” in both SCH 40 and SCH 80. This is what most environmental firms spec by default. Also available in vapor extraction configurations for landfill gas and VOC monitoring.
FlushLock — Sits flush with the top of the casing. Requires a proprietary key (sold separately) for removal. Use these when the well is in a paved area, parking lot, or roadway where an above-grade plug would be a trip hazard or get damaged by vehicles. Available in 2” and 4”, SCH 40 and SCH 80.
J-Plug — Locking expansion plug with a J-slot keyway. Another option for sites that need key-controlled access without a padlock.
H-Plug — Wing-shaped key design for enhanced security. The proprietary key shape adds a layer of tamper resistance beyond a standard padlock.
SCH 40 vs. SCH 80 — Which Schedule?
Match the plug to your well casing schedule. SCH 40 is standard for most monitoring wells — thinner wall, larger internal diameter. SCH 80 has a thicker wall and smaller bore, used in high-pressure or structurally demanding installations. A SCH 40 plug will not seal properly in a SCH 80 casing (and vice versa), so confirm your casing schedule before ordering.
Ordering for Multi-Well Sites
Remediation projects and monitoring networks typically need 20–200 plugs across multiple sizes. Call us at (866) 514-3684 for volume pricing and to confirm size-to-casing compatibility for your specific well network. We ship same-day on in-stock items ordered before 1pm CT.

FAQ
What’s the difference between a well plug and a well cap?
A plug seals from the inside — it expands against the pipe interior wall. A cap fits over the outside of the pipe, gripping the exterior surface. Plugs sit flush or below the casing top; caps extend above it.
Do Torquer plugs fit both SCH 40 and SCH 80 pipe?
No. SCH 40 and SCH 80 have different internal diameters even at the same nominal pipe size. You need the plug matched to your specific casing schedule. We carry both — check the product title for “SCH 40” or “SCH 80.”
Can I padlock a Torquer plug?
Yes. Standard Torquer plugs have a locking eyelet that accepts a padlock or lockout tag for chain-of-custody documentation. FlushLock plugs use a proprietary key instead.
What size plug do I need for a 2-inch monitoring well?
For a 2” well casing, order the 2” Torquer (SCH 40 or SCH 80, depending on your casing). The plug is sized to the nominal pipe diameter. If you’re unsure of your casing schedule, measure the internal diameter — SCH 40 2” pipe has an ID of ~2.067”, SCH 80 is ~1.939”.
Do you offer volume pricing for large monitoring networks?
Yes. Call (866) 514-3684 for bulk pricing on orders of 50+ units. We regularly supply multi-well remediation sites and can ship mixed sizes in a single order.
